July 3, 1999 - The Trocadero in Philly - In My Eyes, Kid Dynamite, Good Riddance, Sick of it All
July 30, 1999 - The Trocadero in Philly - The Akaline Trio, Kid Dynamite, Face To Face.
April 18 1999 - The Trocadero, Philly - Shutdown, E
- Town Concrete, Indescision,
Leeway
This show took place on a sunday, and as many shows as ive been
to on
sunday ive never see such a little turnout for such great bands.
First
up was Shutdown, they went on kinda early around 6, and there was
very
few people. I kept thinking more would show, but did'nt. Shutdown
cut through there set pretty quick, mixing up some old stuff with
new
stuff. Most people just stood there, not to much dancing goin on.
Next
up was E-town concrete, still it seemed like very few people were
there
which really suprised me, but after there first 2 songs alot of
people
were packing in. E - Town played a couple of songs that are going
to be
on there new album, which are allready out on 7'. The shit was
really good.
They played No thanks, Cycles, On life to live, and a few other
songs
from time to shine, and everybody was moving or singing along.
Next up
was indescision, it seemed like half the people that showed up
for E- town
left after they played, oh well, Indescision came out played some
songs
off there latest release, To live and Die in New York. The singer
told
some pretty funny stories in between songs, I guess he really
likes to
tell stories. The people that were there, supported and sung
along and
danced. There set was a good mix of old and new, which is cool.
Finally
up was Leeway, it pissed me off that everyone left for this band.
Why?
cause they were awesome, they come out, and the first thing they
say is
the last time they played in Philly was in 89 w/ the bad brains.
They had
broken up for about 4 years. These guys have been around for a
long time
and played with everyone, and it shows in there music. Lots of
old school
style hardcore mixed in with some funk. It was pretty cool to see
a band that
has been gone for so long. Anyway, they played a shit load of
songs, one song
which they had not played in like 12 years. They also did an
awesome bad brains
cover. The show was somewhat dissapointing, just beacuse so few
showed up and
lots of people just stood around, but overall it was worth it.
May
9 1999 - The Speak Easy Cafe - Soul Sick, Chikarra, Mushmouth,
Self Induced, Neck, Candiria
This show was a little weird. I hurried my ass of to get there
thinking
there would be a huge turnout. I was wrong, the show was not
suppost to
start until 6, but for some reason they made soul sick go on at
5. There
was hardly anyone in the place, like 10 people. This is the
second time
i've seen soul sick and noone was there. I liked them alot more
this time
if they had a cd out i woulda bought it. There singer was super
pissed
cause they had to go on so damn early, i woulda been to. Next up
was
Chikarra, I was suppost to see these guys last week but they
didnt show
for some reason. Anyway, this was the first time i had heard
chikarra but
i've heard good things. They were pretty good, did a full set of
cool
originals, there a rap/metal/hardcore combo i thought they were
pretty good.
I got a free 2 song demo (which i will put in the reviews). Next
up was the
allmighty mushmouth, it seemed like everyone showed up at once
when they
came on. They did a good job pumping the crowd up, and going
right into
out to win. First 5 seconds i got kicked in the face, so i
decided just
to stand back and get some good pictures. Mushmouth played
awesome, there
were numerous fights and violence goin on which was pretty crazy.
For some
reason the sound quality started sounding shitty when they
played, but they
still played a good set. Then came self induced, i had never
heard of them
before. I watched for about 5 mins before i walked out, i just
was'nt into
them, i dunno if it was the sound system or just the band but,
there was
alot of feedback. Next came Neck, once again i had heard tons of
different
things about neck and didnt know what to expect. They came out
first and
actually sounded like korn (i had heard this before but didnt
believe it)
the singer had 2 different vocal styles, melodic, then screaming.
The screaming
parts were cool. I dont wanna dis by saying they sound like korn,
but that was
the first thing that jumped into my head, oh well. Next Candiria,
chalk up another
time for me seeing these guys, the first few times i saw them i
wasnt into it at all,
now after the 3rd then 4th time, im liking them alot more. Lots
of people left
but the people who stayed tore shit up and made candiria feel
welcome. We got an
interview with candiria and should be up on the page soon.
ok, well i just
got home from the all or nothing show, at the
Collenbrook baptist church in Drexel Hill. Well like every
Collenbrook show this one had some problems. NOT THE BANDS.
first up was all or nothing, a local band with alot of talent.
These guys kicked ass. Its to bad the collenbrook sucks,
cause bands like this deserve better. Anyway, there was about
100 kids at the show, there was some dancing going on, but the
"security" were being asshole when people bumed into
eachother.
My friend got yelled at and almost kicked out. All or nothing
played, we hate ska but we hate goth kids more, revenge of the
pink bunnies, the all or nothing youth anthem, power crazy,
and the rest of there originals which was like 6 other songs.
These guys are fairly new and allready they have a shitload of
really good original songs. If they stick around you'll hear alot
about them. Next up, some ska band i saw before...no comment
during there set an argument broke out between the bouncer and
my friend AGAIN. so we walked outside. Finally was, The Spunkoids
a PUNK ROCK band from upper darby, some of there members are in
all
or nothing. These guys are cool, totally punk with songs like
boston
cream, inbred, i like cream cheese,STD'S, and a bunch more.
During
there set my friend was running around, and he got pushed into
the
"security" this time the "security gaurd"
decided he had had it
and grabbed my friend by the neck, all the kids were jumping all
around
screaming at the guy, a fight almost broke out between the
security
and a bunch of the crowd. My friend was pissed and flipping on
the guy.
My friend was thrown out. I guess the "security gaurd"
does'nt understand
what a hardcore/punk rock show is, oh well fuck him.
May 23 1999 - Challengers, Bear DE - Dying,
The Death of Us, My Body My
Blood, Dysphoria, 25 ta life
Drove all the way down to delaware for this one. Well i should'nt
complain its only like 30 mins away, but we got lost for a few
mins
so it took us like 45 mins to get there. We Missed the first band
who's name was genetic dis ...something, i didnt get the whole
name.
We got there just as Dying was about to go on. Dying is from PA,
im
not sure where exactly. They were insane, the band members
literaly
beat each other up on stage. Reminded me alot of Dillinger Escape
Plan, Or a small version of Bad Luck 13. They ran all around the
stage knocking shit over, hitting each other with there guitars.
They even took there shoes off???? In the end the bassist smashed
his bass of the speaker numerous times and broke it. There music
style is just as crazy as there stage presence, the music is all
over
the place, odd timing etc. Next, the death of us, the entire bad
besides the drummer moved into the crowd to play. These guys were
New school metal core style, and im pretty sure they were a sxe
band.
They played a good set of originals, and finished it off with a
judge
cover of Fed Up, any band that covers JUDGE kicks ass. Next My
Body
My blood, i had heard alot about these guys and was siked to see
them.
They have a good old school style sound, with some rap mixed in.
Every
kid in the place sung every lyric to every song. I guess these
guys
are religious hardcore, but they kicked ass. They kept playing
the
beginning of Madball's "SET IT OFF", but never played
the whole song
but had every kid screaming set it off. Untill today i didnt
really
know delaware had a widespeard hardcore scene, these guy's are
keeping DE in check. Then up was Dysphora, what can i say? One of
the
best most brutal Pa hardcore bands. Alot of people left for these
guys
but they fucken missed out cause Dysphoria ruled. Played alot
of stuff off Hope Without Reason, w/ Start Again, At Day's End,
Where You Ought To be and a bunch more. Gravity (there singer)
was
dancing his ass of going crazy, he can fucken move. The people
that
stayed danced and represented for Dysphoria. 25 TA LIFE did not
play
i didnt find out they were'nt playin till half way through the
show
oh well, it was still a good show other than the fact i was
really
tired but oh well.
June 20 1999 - Disassociate, Mushmouth, Indecision, 25 Ta Life, Earth Crisis @ The TLA on South Street in Philly.
Disassociate
Well, we got there early enough to see these guys, but we could
not
get in yet yo see them. Justin from Indecsion hooked us up on the
guestlist, but they kinda got there late. Thanks again to Justin
for the free pass. Sorry I could'nt give a review of
Disassociate.
Mushmouth
Pa's finest, Mushmouth, what can i say. Every time I see these
guys its
so great. I walked in just as they were starting with Out To Win.
The
place was pretty opened up and noone was moving up. But the
people
dancing made Mushmouth feel welcome enough. It seemed like the
place
really got goin on there last song. Mushmouth did a bunch of
songs
on Out To Win, w/ Fearless, Follower, Uncertain, and Smothered to
name a few. Once again Mushmouth lived up to my expectations.
Indecision
The last show I went to I saw Indecision, and I took pictures for
the
entire set, so I was siked to not have to be shooting the camera.
Indecision started off good, They had the place really going
until
the middle of hallowed be thy name when Justin's guiatar head
kinda blew up, I looked up on stage and saw a cloud of smoke just
kind
of rising off it. They tried to fix it, and during this time
Artie
talked to the crowd about the media and it's bullshiting about
Kosovo.
Every time i see Indecision, I look forward to hearing his
speaches
hahaha. Anyway they could'nt fix the head, and played one more
song
minus Justin and that was it.
25 Ta Life
There was a really long wait in between Indecision and 25 ta
life, because
25's guitarist and drummer got lost and had'nt showed up yet. The
crowd
was really anticipating 25 ta life and when they finally came out
everyone
in the place was either dancing, or trying to pile on top of
everyone to
get close enough to Rick to sing. The first song they played was
a new one
but it seemed like alot of people allready new the lyrics. 25
played
Strength Through Unity, Turning Point, Crucified, Took My
Kindness For
Weakness, and 1, where it begins and a few more. Rick spoke about
tough
guys and unity in between songs, everything was pretty positive
for there
set. 25 ta life, did twice what i thought they would do it's been
awhile
since i last saw them and forgot the kind of energy they bring
when they play
live. Anyone who's seen 25 knows what im talking about.
Earth Crisis
I've only ever seen Earth Crisis once, and that was at a metal
show and it was'nt
that great, Earth Crisis played good, but the crowd was just
different. I've been
a fan of EC for awhile, and I really did not know what to expect
from them live.
They came out, and everyone in the place was ready to move. I
did'nt expect that
many people to stay for them, but i was all wrong. Notable stuff
they played
Firestorm, All Out War, Ecocide, No Allegience, Gamorrah's Season
Ends,
The diciplin, Forced March, and alot more stuff from Dectroy the
Machines
and there newest album. All Out War and Firestorm had everyone in
the place
piling on and goin off. At the end of Gamorrah's Season there
were some of the
biggest pile ons of the night, ton's of people jumping all over
and screaming
I AM STRAIGHT EDGE!. Earth Crisis had alot of energy goin and the
crowd response was
really good. There set was much better than i had expected and
were more than worth staying around to see.
July 30, 1999 - The Trocadero in Philly - The
Akaline Trio, Kid Dynamite, Face To Face
The Akaline trio
First up was chicago's Akaline Trio. They opened the show up with
there
blend of Emo new age style punk. Not to band for a band i have
not heard
of. Although not many people were moving throughout there set it
seemed
like alot of people enjoyed seeing them.
Kid Dynamite
Second time seeing Kid Dynamite this month at the Trocadero. Kid
Dynamite
is the Philly hometown hero's and everyone there knew who these
guys were.
After what seemed like a long set up time kid dynamite came out
and with one
pluck on the guitar, the entire place opened up and those up
against the barriers
were allready getting crushed. Kid Dynamite played what they said
to be there longest
set ever, Because everyone just kept begging for more. they
played just about every song
on there self titled debut, one cover and 2 of the songs off the
split with 88 fingers
louie. During there set they also took the time to announce the
Stalag's closing
and the benefit show, up till know i had not gotten any official
word on its closing.
Face To Face
I've been a Face to Face fan for a long time and they are one of
the few bands I like
that I had'nt seen. So i was siked for them. The heat in the
place was terrible while
waiting for the band to come on and it just got worse as they
played. They came out and
opened up with a song off the new album, which seemed very emo
the crowd reaction was
one you have to see. They continued there set with old and new,
including some classics
such as disconnected. They kept asking the crowd what it wanted
to hear... and gave the
choice of OLD or NEW everyone screamed OLD...threw the heat the
crowd was non stop
and everyone on the floor including myself wearing a shirt were
feeling like they
jumped in a pool with all there clothes on, the floor was
slippery and people were falling
all over. The show seemed pretty positive, except for a few
fights that broke out, one
which happened to the kid standing in front of me, for what
reason i dont know, all i saw
was him get jawed then kicked in the face twice, he was bleeding
pretty bad and seemed dazed.
All together face to face played for an hour. There new cd was
selling for the price of only
5$...look for a review.
10/17/99 - The Trocadero Theater, Philly Pa - Buried Alive, Saves
The
Day, The Dillenger Escape Plan, Kid Dynamite, Snapcase
This was one incredible line up for a show, each band totally
diverse in there styles of music, came together to play what
seemed
to be one of the better shows i've seen at the Trocadero, it was
sold
out as well, so the house was packed. The bands were calling this
the Steve Evetts Showcase tour, because steve evetts had produced
each
of there records
First Up, after a long wait in line, was Buried Alive. I have to
admit
im not a big fan of there new record, Its the style of heavy
chuga
chuga breakdowns that i normally love, but it just seemed to go
by
quick and not really do anything for me. But my opinion of them
changed
live, there songs flew by and caused the biggest hole in the
dance
floor of kids kick boxing. There breakdowns being very similar to
bands like hatebreed, you can imagine everyone how was going off.
They did a great job of opening the place up and changed my
impression
of them totally.
Saves The Day, i've heard this band hunderds of times on local
radio
shows, and I did'nt find anything wrong with it. They play a very
poppy emo style of music, not exactly my favorite style, but
something
i can listen to from time to time. Usualy i get bored seeing emo
bands, but Saves the Day was incredibly energetic and there sing
alongs were real good. I'll end up picking up there record
eventually.
The Dillenger Escape Plan, in my opinion, for a serious band that
makes up a very talented group of musicians, these guys has the
craziest
stage presence ever. Musically, If you were to breakdown every
instrument
one by one, you would find everything to be very hard to play,
and
probably wouldnt think to combine everything together. I'm not a
fan
of there records, i can listen to it from time to time, but there
live
performance is why i love this band, its very few times where i
can just
stand aside and watch a band and have a good time. Dillenger does
this for
me, i stand and watch the singer swing his mic around, his the
other band
members, knock them over, lye down on the floor and scream, watch
the guitar players wrestle there instrumets, in the midst of
flashing
lights and strobes, and be completly entertained. These guys are
evil,
the scariest part about them is, untill they start playing the
music
they seem completly like your average everyday people, the singer
comes
out and doesnt say a word except maybe for hi, but once
everything gets
goin its a site that needs to be seen to be described. If these
guys
play near you go see them, even if you cant stand the music.
Kid Dynamite, THE HOMETOWN HARDCORE HEROES, wow, this is my third
time
seeing KD at the troc and they seem to get better and beteer
every time.
There one of the most energetic bands to see, there sing alongs
are great,
they have a good message, and there from Philly. This band has
achieved
sucsess from many angles, and are greatful to the loyal philly
fans for
sticking by them, and so they always put on a great show for us.
They
played just about everysong off there self titled cd, A bunch of
new stuff
and finally did the black flag cover, RISE ABOVE which were the
biggest sing
alongs of the night.
Snapcase, i've been into this band a long time, yet, i havent
seen them
before. Last august was the last time they played here and before
that was
warped tour, and I missed both. So i was pretty excited to see
them. First
thing was there intro, It was a strange recording playing, that I
think
might have had bag pipes but im not exactly sure. But it doesnt
sound
anything like the bands music at all. I looked over at a friend
to say,
hey this intro is weird, but as i started to say it, I was on the
other
side of the dance floor and caboose was playing, there intro is
totally
great because your not prepared when they take stage. Caboose
got the entire place moving, and didnt stop the whole way
through.
There performance was much better than i would have expected,
even though
i am a big fan of them. They managed to mix in everything from
there first
7" to about 4 songs off there new unreleased album. The new
songs were
great as well. They also mentioned that they wanna do to same
tour with
the same bands again very soon, which would be great. So if you
miss
this line up the first time around, catch it the second time
cause its
well worth it for 8$.
Nov 6 1999 -
Mushmouth, Dysphoria, A Life Once Lost, Diecast, BloodRust
A Life Once Lost
Well, I did'nt get to see a life once lost because they showed up
late,
and by the time they got on, i was hungry and went to wawa.
Anyway i got
lost comin back from Wawa, and got back in time to see there last
song. It
did'nt seem to bad to miss them because i was seeing them the
night after
this show.
Bloodrust
I had never heard nor seen these guys before but they were pretty
funny.
after they got everything set up some guy came out and got on the
mic,
he was wearing some long coat, next thing he says something about
the back
street boys, takes off his coat, and all he's wearing is a
g-string.
Musically these guy were really metal, Screamy vocals with rap
parts added
in. There last song another guy got on stage and sung with them,
and that
was prolly the best song of there set. It was a really good blend
of rap and
metal, and the 2 singers made it all the better.
Dysphoria
Holy shit, this band is insane, there music is incredible and
indescribable.
There songs are like one huge breakdown, and every time i see
them, more
and more people go crazy for them. They played a bunch of songs
off Hope Without
Reason, and had everyone going off. One guy broke the chandelier
on the ceiling
with a backpack. Dysphoria has something new coming out soon, so
be on the lookout
for it, and if they play near MAKE SURE you go see them.
Mushmouth
The last time i saw mushmouth, there singer Chris was'nt in the
band anymore.
I don't know what happened to him, he left hardcore and came
back. Chris Seemed
extra pissed off for this show, and in true mushmouth fashion,
got the crowd
riled up by talking shit. Once again everyone went crazy, this
was'nt the best
mushmouth performance i have seen, but it was definetly good.
Novermber 7, 1999 - Collenbrook Church, Upper Darby Pa Resentment, Pool Hall Brawl, With Immortality, A Life Once Lost
